The Root Clause!

How the World sees me!

I live in Bombay, now Mumbai.

But I am not a Bombayite because I wasn’t born here.

I was born in Assam, the tea garden state.

But I am not Assamese because I don’t have roots there.

I have roots in Rajasthan, the golden state.

But I have no marwari influences since my ancestors moved away from there.

In Bombay, I am told I sound North-Indian.

When I say I am from Assam, I’m told I don’t look Assamese.

When I say I’m Marwari from Rajasthan, it causes too much confusion because I am nothing like they expect me to be.

I have lived in Assam, studied in Rajasthan and worked in many cities across the country and have been based in Mumbai since almost two decades.

And still I feel, I am not a Bombayite!

How I see Myself!

I am born in India

I have travelled the world.

Read the world’s literature.

Eaten the world’s food.

Loved the world’s people

Absorbed all the experiences.

Assimilated all the influences.

Imbibed all the culture.

I belong to the world. The world belongs to me.

Yet I belong to nowhere and no one. Nothing or no one belongs to me.

Until next time…@thethinkingcaptain

  1. The quintessential ‘Nowhere Man’ the Beatles sang to us about ! I have followed a similar path dropping anchors nowhere till recently. I know the feeling and the exhilaration of being belonging to no place yet everyplace! Look forward to many more such delightful insights !

  3. This article could’ve easily been one filled with remorse and regret but in your hands there’s just so much of excitement and the reader is left asking what’s next and where to now…
